Abstract

The estuary of Plumbon river is located in Mangkang Kulon, Semarang city. The estuary of Plumbon river is used as a traffic lane of fishing vessels to catch fish in the sea. In addition, the Plumbon river suspected as waste disposal sites of traditional industries and residential areas around the river. The purpose of this study was to determine the abundance of phytoplankton in the estuary of the Plumbon river and to identify the type of phytoplankton that is potentially as HABs (Harmful Algal Blooms) in estuary of Plumbon river. The method used in this research is descriptive method and the method of sampling using purposive sampling method. There are three stations in this study,  where each station is performed three repetitions.  Phytoplankton that found during the study consisted of four classes, namely Baccilariophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Cyanophyceae, and Euglenaphyceae. Total genus were found during research in station one are as much as 39 genera. Total abundance of phytoplankton at the first station was 3766 ind/L,  at station two as many as 4612 ind/L and at station three as many as 4800 ind/L. Phytoplankton causing HABs (Harmful Algal Blooms) which is found in the study site are five genera of Baccilariophyceae classes, namely Pseudonitzschia, Nitzschia, Skeletonema, Chaetoceros, and Thallassiosira.
