Abstract

This study aims to analyze the development of the batik craft industry in a fairly old area in Surakarta, namely Kampung Kauman. Using historical methods, this article focuses on discussing the efforts of batik craftsmen and government policies and related parties in the development of batik in Kampung Kauman. Batik originating from Kampung Kauman is known as traditional batik that has a variety of unique motifs and patterns. In addition, Kauman batik also has historical value because it was born and developed from the Abdi Dalem Pamethakan Kasunanan Surakarta. Along with the development of the era and the decline in public demand for batik, there is concern that Kauman batik will disappear. This study traces the efforts made by various parties, especially batik craftsmen in developing Kampung Kauman into a center for the batik craft industry in Surakarta City. The results of the study show that the development of Kampung Kauman batik began with the concerns and awareness of the successors of batik craftsmen and the policies of the Surakarta City government, one of which is through the formation of the Kauman Batik Tourism Village Association (PKWBK). The efforts made were first through the determination of Kauman Village as a batik craft industry center in 2007, which was continued with programs to popularize Kauman Village batik, one of which was by making Kauman Village a batik tourism destination, in addition to Laweyan.

Keywords: Kauman Village Batik Craft Center; Kauman Batik; Surakarta City UMKM.
