Abstract

Education is a key factor in a nation's progress, with formal education encompassing primary, secondary, and higher education levels. The Indonesian government has implemented a 12-year compulsory education program to promote equitable access to education and enhance the quality of future generations. However, challenges remain, such as school dropouts and low community participation in secondary education. This study aims to analyze community participation in formal senior high school education in Bruno District, Purworejo Regency, and to identify the factors contributing to low participation rates. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, with data collected through interviews, documentation, and literature review. The data were analyzed using source triangulation techniques. The findings indicate that community participation in financial, material, academic, cultural, and evaluative aspects of education remains low. The community tends to be passive and makes minimal contributions in supporting students’ continued education. The dominant factors contributing to the low participation in senior high school include a lack of parental attention, low student interest in schooling, cultural influences, and economic constraints. Other factors, although less dominant, also play a role-such as inadequate learning facilities and the remote location of schools-which further hinder students’ continuation to higher levels of formal education.
