Abstract

The increasing prevalence of diabetes mellitus among young people has led to a need for health professionals to find new ways to educate the public about this disease. One effective method is to use the social media platform Twitter. However, if health workers have the necessary skills to use Twitter to disseminate health information, it will be easier for the message to reach a broad audience. This literature review aimed to identify strategies health workers can use to disseminate information about diabetes through Twitter. Eight articles were found that discuss strategies health workers can use to deliver effective health messages on social media, five of which specifically address audience attitudes towards health information circulating on Twitter. The results of this literature review found that credibility, word choice, and two-way communication are essential factors that can improve the dissemination of health messages on Twitter that a broad audience can accept.
