Abstract

This article aims to analyze the struggle of Indonesia as the host of the 4th Asian Games as a form of cultural diplomacy in the midst of the global conflict in 1959-1962. The city of Jakarta managed to host the 4th Asian Games after winning the vote. Using the historical method, this article reveals preparations in order to meet the minimum requirements to host a multi-event sporting event. The results of the study show that various efforts have been made, starting from submitting funding proposals, building sports facilities, to the construction of supporting facilities, so that the implementation of the 4th Asian Games can be held properly. Various preparations have been made by a team appointed by the government since the early 1960s. The results also show that the 4th Asian Games in Indonesia is not an ordinary sports competition because it contains a political goal, namely as a form of cultural diplomacy in the midst of global conflict or to be more precise, the Cold War. Sport and politics do not have mutually exclusive spheres of operation and sport is often used as a medium to achieve foreign policy goals.

Keywords: 4th Asian Games; Cultural diplomacy; Sport; The cold War.
