Abstract
This study aims to examine the effects of narcissism and self-control levels on TikTok addiction among adolescents using an explanatory quantitative approach involving 100 respondents aged 13–18 years. The result indicates that TikTok addiction among adolescents is not an isolated phenomenon, but rather the outcome of an interaction between personality traits and self-control capacity. Specifically, narcissism was found to have a positive effect on TikTok addiction, indicating that higher levels of narcissism among adolescent TikTok users are associated with greater levels of addictive behavior. Conversely, self-control was found to have a negative effect on TikTok addiction, indicating that lower levels of self-control increase adolescents’ susceptibility to addictive TikTok use. The combined influence of narcissism and self-control demonstrates a very strong effect and explains a substantial proportion of the variance in TikTok addiction among adolescents. These findings are consistent with the I PACE theory, which suggests that addictive behaviors emerge from the interaction between individual personality characteristics, such as narcissism, and weakened self-regulatory abilities. Therefore, efforts to increase public awareness should focus on directing adolescents’ narcissistic tendencies toward more creative and productive activities, as well as strengthening self-control to prevent excessive and uncontrolled social media consumption.
