Abstract
Parental divorce not only changes the family structure but also affects communication patterns between parents and children. This study aims to understand children’s narratives in managing communication relationships with parents after divorce. This study uses an interpretive paradigm with a qualitative approach through narrative analysis. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews with four informants aged 17–25 who experienced their parents’ divorce. Data analysis was conducted using Todorov’s Narrative Model which includes five stages: initial balance, disruption, recognition of disruption, repair efforts, and the establishment of a new balance, and supported by Relational Maintenance Theory which includes strategies of positivity, openness, assurances, social networks, and shared tasks. The results of the study indicate that children develop adaptive communication strategies such as selective openness, positive attitudes, providing emotional support, utilizing the extended family, and using communication media. The conclusion of this study indicates that children manage communication relationships with their parents after divorce through adaptive communication patterns and simple communication strategies to maintain continuity amidst changes and limited interaction due to divorce conflict
