Abstract
Bumi Manusia (2019) is a film adaptation of Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s novel that represents colonialism and indigenous resistance through the character of Minke. As a historical adaptation, the film opens a space for meaning negotiation between literary discourse and cinematic representation. This study aims to examine how fans of Pramoedya’s works interpret Minke as a symbol of indigenous resistance in the film. Using a qualitative audience reception approach, this research analyzes preferred readings from 25 selected scenes through Roland Barthes’ semiotics, complemented by in-depth interviews with Pramoedya’s readers. The findings show that most informants adopt a dominant-hegemonic reading, interpreting Minke as a form of intellectual and symbolic resistance embodied through values of humanism, egalitarianism, and freedom of thought. However, some informants demonstrate a negotiated reading due to the film’s emphasis on romantic narratives over ideological discourse. This study highlights the role of emotional engagement and fan identity in shaping audience interpretation, indicating that historical film adaptations function as critical spaces for negotiating collective memory and indigenous identity
