Abstract
Women in television series are often depicted as being constrained by social constructions of gender, characterized as feminine and domestic roles. The Crown, through woman leader character, offers an alternative narrative that women can have complex feminine and masculine characteristics, inhabit the domestic and the public sphere as a form of resistance against the dominant ideology about women. This study aims to understand the character development of woman leader in The Crown series, using qualitative research methods, critical paradigm, and Sara Mills' critical discourse analysis approach. This research is supported by gender performativity theory and women's discourse theory. The results of the study show that a woman leader has feminine and masculine characteristics but does not have the freedom to carry them out. Character analysis shows that Elizabeth, as queen, ends up reducing the feminine characteristics that are her preference (relationship-oriented) and inserting masculine characteristics (task-oriented) that are not her preference but must be carried out. Elizabeth's physical appearance combines a style that is considered feminine (a silhouette dress that fits her body shape, accessories, jewelry, and makeup) and a style that is considered masculine on several occasions (a shirt with trousers and dark colors), showing her dynamics in carrying out her multiple roles. The fragmentation of Elizabeth's body shows resistance, Elizabeth's voice is raised by expressing her discomfort during hair fragmentation and telling her experiences as a mechanic that is considered masculine during arm fragmentation. Focalization shows Elizabeth as a subject through internal focalization that shows how woman as leader is aware of the complex challenges and obstacles she experiences. The schemata shows that The Crown represents woman leader characters with familiar narratives. a woman leader is more likely to be in the domestic sphere, more likely to adjust characteristics that refer to masculinity to be recognized for her leadership, more likely to experience self-dialectics as a woman and a queen. Although on some sides there are attempts to represent woman leader with alternative narratives, the series has not been able to present the character of a woman leader with a narrative that is not limited by social construction.
