Abstract
The research was motivated by the conflict that occurred due to the lack of communication and more constructive interaction between parents and children in discussions related to plans to continue education abroad. This happened because the communication that occurred in the informant's family was one-way, where the parents had an authoritarian attitude, and the child did not have the space to be able to provide a response. The purpose of the study was to determine the communication used in managing the conflict that occurred between parents and children related to the decision to continue education abroad. The method used was descriptive qualitative with an interpretive phenomenological approach. The theories used in the study were the Relational Dialectic theory and the Family Communication Pattern theory. Data collection was carried out by conducting in-depth interviews with three families consisting of parents and children who had experienced conflict related to decision-making to continue education abroad from Mela Village, Central Tapanuli Regency. The results of the study found that the conflict that occurred could not be managed well. Because the conflict that occurred was managed by suppressing and forcing the will of the child to be able to accept the decision taken by the parents. This happened because of the bad experiences experienced by the parents while they were away from home and the lack of understanding of the parents about the importance of education. In addition, in the informant's family, there was an authoritarian communication pattern and inconsistency in decision making. Decisions were taken by parents without any room for children to be involved in decision making. The study also found that children did not try to negotiate and discuss the decisions made. Instead, children just gave in and accepted the decisions made by their parents even though the children felt unfair about the decisions made. Overall, the results of this study indicate that the communication pattern in the informant's family is one-way, because parents are the ones who have full authority in decision making.
