Abstract
This study aims to describe the adaptation process of female students at Pondok Pesantren Nahdhotul Muslimat, Surakarta, who come from a modern societal background, with a focus on the meaning of adab towards ustadzah as a driving factor in this adaptation process. Using a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design, this research uncovers the deep experiences of four 9th-grade female students through interviews and field observations. The findings show a significant change in how adab is understood by the students, which was initially perceived as general politeness, but later evolved into an obligation to respect ustadzah in various situations. This social and psychological adaptation process also involves changes in communication patterns and behavior, both in interactions with peers and ustadzah. The role of ustadzah is crucial in shaping the meaning of adab and helping the students adjust to the norms of the pesantren. This study uses the Integrative Theory of Cross-Cultural Adaptation, the U-Curve Model, and the Compliance Gaining Model to explain the dynamics of adaptation. The findings are expected to contribute to understanding cultural adaptation dynamics in pesantren and provide insights for educators in managing pedagogical relationships and improving the adaptation process for female students from modern backgrounds.
