Abstract
Women, especially in South Korea, are often faced with expectations that limit their roles due to patriarchal values. However, the movie Kill Boksoon offers an alternative idea that explores how women can build a strong identity by combining masculine and feminine attributes, and transcend the traditional boundaries set by gender construction. This research is supported by performance and positioning theory, gaze theory, and girl power through Sara Mills’ critical analysis approach. The results show that Boksoon makes feminity a source of power. The fragmentation of the female body highlights physical strength and focuses on character expressions and gestures without getting caught up in social objectification. Internal focalization shows female subjectivity in relation to Boksoon’s perspective and emotional conflicts, while external focalization positions Boksoon as an empowered figure in the midst of masculine domination. In conlusion, this study shows that women’s success is judged based on their ability to perform domestic and emotional duties ideally. Despite the resistance to patriarchal structures through Boksoon’s actions and decisions, the film’s overall narrative still reproduces the ideology that places women in a dilemma between fulfilling domestic roles and achieving complete freedom from social restrictions.
