Abstract

Friendship plays an important role in adolescent social development, particularly in providing social support and improving psychological well-being. However, the emergence of problems in friendship is inevitable, such as disputes, betrayal, lack of emotional support, and lack of involvement in joint activities which can ultimately have an impact on the decline in the quality of friendship. One of the factors that can maintain the quality of friendship is forgiveness. This study aims to determine the relationship between forgiveness and friendship quality in adolescents. The sample in this study consisted of 344 middle adolescents aged 15-17 years who had experienced disputes/arguments with friends selected using convenience sampling. The data collection methods used were the Transgression-Related Interpersonal Motivation (TRIM-18) scale and the Friendship Quality Questionnaire (FQQ). Data analysis was performed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation which found a positive relationship between forgiveness and friendship quality among adolescents, with a significance value of p = 0,000 < 0,05 and a correlation coefficient of r = 0,350. This means that the more forgiving an individual is, the higher the quality of friendship that individual has. These results indicate that forgiveness is an important prosocial mechanism in strengthening social relationships among adolescents.
