Abstract

ABSTRACT

This experiment was conducted to study the effect of free choice feeding and variety of protein sources on protein digestibility of Japanese Quail (Coturnix - coturnix japonica). Experiment used 216 japanese quail females, 3 weeks of age with average body weight 56,01 ± 1,61 g. They were kept in battery cages. Feedstuffs used in this study are corn, rice bran, soybean meal, fish meal, coconut meal, Poultry Meat Meal (PMM). Experimental design used was completely randomized design (CRD) with 3 replications and 9 treatments. Each replication consists of 8 heads of quail. T1 = 2 energy sources (rice bran, corn) and 2 protein sources (fish meal, soybean meal), T2 = 2 energy sources (rice bran, corn) and 3 sources of protein fish meal, soybean meal, coconut cake), T3 = 2 energy sources (rice bran, corn) and 4 protein sources (fish meal, soybean meal, coconut cake, PMM). Data were analyzed using a variety of test F at the level of 5%, followed by Duncan test if there is significant effect of the treatment. Results showed that the treatment of free choice feeding do not influence significantly (P> 0,05) on feed intake, feed rate, and protein digestibility parameters, but on the protein intake parameter showed that the treatment influence significantly (P< 0,05). The conclusion of experiment is quail has a different level of preference on the variety of feed and free choice feeding can make the quail meet the physiological needs according to their needs without affecting the rate of feed intake and digestibility of the protein.
